A dead heat

As the Democrats continue to convene in Charlotte, the Real Clear Politics average of the polls shows the race as a dead heat.

This is not good news for the incumbent.

And the RCP electoral vote estimate is tightening. It currently projects President Obama with 221 likely electoral votes, and Governor Romney with 191. 126 electoral votes remain up for grabs. 270 are required to elect a president.

For the first time, a clear path to 270 is beginning to emerge for Romney.
