Democrats boo God and Israel as convention chair cheats to get Him into the platform
Amid loud boos and hissing from the floor- and probably enough of the delegates voting "no" to actually have defeated the amendment- the leadership of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte used the power of the chair to ram through an amendment to the party platform making a passing reference to God, and to recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland claimed that the later was President Obama's "personal view,' despite the chief executive's previous avoidance of any acknowledgment of Jerusalem's status as Israel's capital, a point highly offensive to the Palestinians and their supporters.
The controversial amendment re-inserted the following from the 2008 platform; "...We need a government that stands up for the hopes, values and interests of working people and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential."
A two-thirds majority of the convention was required to adopt the changes. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the convention chair, called the question three times before declaring the amendment adopted despite the fact that it clearly did not receive the required two-thirds majority:
Despite their ambivalence about God, the Democratic convention has witnessed a miracle: the convention chair creating a two-thirds majority ex nihilo.
Who ever thought we'd see the day when God would be booed at a political convention? Or when it would be necessary to cheat in order to get a passing reference to Him inserted into a party platform?
