This year's TV characters are gayer than life
I thought it must be my imagination, but it struck me that the percentage of gay and bi-sexual characters on network television was actually higher this year than in the general population.
It wasn't my imagination after all.
While Kinsey's long-discredited figure of 10% of the population is still often repeated as the incidence of homosexuality, the study on which that statistic is based counted as homosexual anyone who had ever had a single homosexual experience. Multiple studies all over the world have consistently come up with figures closer to three to four percent of the male population (lower for women) even for individuals who had had a single homosexual experience, with the percentage of the population exclusively or primarily homosexual either lower than that, and certainly no higher.
The proportion of network TV characters who are gay this year? According to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, it's 4.4%.
