No fooling

The pope says that priests should "pardon" women who have abortions.

Of course. Any sin that's repented of is forgiven. But why make a point of saying this? Once again, this disaster of a pope seems to be signaling that Christians need to make nice-nice with the world's values. And as John points out, friendship with the world is enmity with Christ.

ADDENDUM: I take it back.Apparently under canon law only a bishop can absolve a woman who has had an abortion. While I can't imagine any theological justification for ever withholding absolution from a penitent sinner, the Pope's extension of authorization to offer it to women who have had abortions to ordinary priests can be seen as a positive step.

Of course, it's just an illustration of the problems involved in subordinating the Gospel to human rules and hierarchies to begin with.
