Pianka: I don't think human near-extinction would be good!

Controversial University of Texas professor Eric Pianka quite legitimately, I think, defends himself against charges that he actually advocates the death of 90% of humanity as a means of saving the environment.

He's even received a death threat after the Drudge Report published both an article about him and letters to an amateur science website critical of him.

While his words could be construed to imply that he embraces what he believes is the impending demise of nearly all of our species- and that certainly is the spin both the article in the Seguin Gazette and letters on the Society of Amateur Scientists website give his words- he never actually comes out and says that the disaster he predicts will be a good thing.

Given his disavowal of the notion, he deserves the benefit of the doubt.
