Illustrating the bigotry of the cultural Left

Consider the following two cartoons:

The first is from the Rolling Stone. The second seems to originate with a not-very-clever, bigoted and rather boorish blog called Jesusland, which purports (it's meant to be satire, you see) to celebrate the birth of a new "crypto-Fascist" state by that name.

These two cartoons illustrate just how deep is the cultural doo-doo in which the Left finds itself. The point is reinforced by the apparent inability of large segments of the cultural Left to see the problem. Perhaps if they stare at these cartoons long enough, it will dawn on them.

Perhaps, but I doubt it. They are, you see, everything they claim that conservative Christians are: self-righteous True Believers who are, for the most part, simply unable to transcend their own ideological mindset.

Some time before Fr. Richard John Neuhaus left Lutheranism (for what I found to be rather ill-conceived reasons) to become a Catholic priest, I head him speak at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis."The most religious people in the world are those of India," then- Pastor Neuhaus told us. "The least religious are those of Sweden.

"The United States is a nation of Indians whose cultural elites are Swedes- and the Indians are getting restless."

The election results show that restlessness, but the more religiously bigoted elements of the cultural Left still don't get it. The values these folks ridicule represent an important and even foundational element of the American character. The contempt displayed by the cartoons (and by a great deal of what passes for analysis among a segment of the American body politic in which ridicule has long since replaced reason as the preferred currency of discourse) illustrates how out of touch these folks are with not only the nation as a whole, but with the most basic elements of its corporate psyche.

These folks are, of course, free to dissent from them; unlike them, we who share those values object only to the way in which that dissent is expressed, not to the fact that they express their opinions at all. But at least until respectful dialogue and debate replace ridicule as their method of addressing that disagreement, they are going to continue to reap the consequences of their bigoted arrogance at the polls.
