Make or break? Bush schedules prime time speech on immigration Monday

Amid rumors that he will balance a plan whereby illegal immigrants who voluntarily return home will be given preferential status for legally re-entering the country with the deployment of National Guard troops along the Mexican border to keep new illegals out, President Bush will address the nation in prime time Monday on the subject of immigration.

This may be his last chance to get on the right side of his base on the subject.

One thing, in any case, needs to be gotten straight: even the President's much-criticized "guest worker" program is predicated upon those who take advantage of it having entered the country legally, even if having left after previously having entered it illegally.
