Lance Cpl. Larry Shumate is one of those held in connection with the al Hamdania incident. He and seven other Americans- six fellow Marines, and a Navy corpsman- are accused of murdering an Iraqi civilian last April.
He and his fellow defendants are not wealthy. They will be up against the full legal weight of the United States government. If they are guilty, they should be convicted and punished. But they are entitled to the presumption of innocence- and to a fair trial.
Here is a blog dedicated to raising funds to assure a decent defense and a fair trial to Cpl. Shumate and his fellow defendents. Whether or not one supports the war, and even whether or not these men are guilty, it is not only in their interest but in the interest of America and in the interest of justice that they get the best possible defense.
