Wictory Wednesday: Re-Elect Senator George Allen (R-Va)

This week Wictory Wednesday is supporting the reelection of the man who- along with Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee- at the moment inhabits my personal "short list" for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination: Senator George Allen of Virginia.

Sen. Allen has been a consistent supporter of conservative values in the Senate, earning a place in the ranks of the American Conservative Union's "Best and Brightest." His personal hero is Ronald Reagan, and he's a champion of fiscal conservatism. He introduced legislation to require a balanced budget, and also supported a law that would have docked congressmen's paychecks if they failed to produce a budget by October 1. Sen. Allen believes that members of Congress should be held accountable if they fail to do one of the few things they are, after all, legally required to do!

Senator Allen understands that legal immigration is a good thing- but not illegal immigration. While it has become chic for members of Congress to suggest it's time to surrender to America's enemies and to proclaim that America is the cause of every world problem, Senator Allen understands that no security comes from surrender. Winning the war in Iraq will take time, but troop reductions are already being planned (without "help" from the interference of partisan Democrats). He understands that "staying the course" not only is a strategy, but that- the MSM to the contrary- it's a strategy that's working.

Sen. Allen is being opposed by a strong Democratic candidate, and needs your help. A leading contender- some say the frontrunner- for the 2008 Republican Presidential nomination, Sen. Allen's defeat would be a major blow to the conservative cause; his decisive re-election would send a strong message that that cause is in good shape heading into the 2008 presidential cycle, and keep one of its most eloquent champions in available, if we should so decide, to bear the Republican standard into the the 2008 Republican presidential campaign.

Please considering donating to Sen. Allen's reelection campaign or volunteering your time.

First, you have to know that I normally do support Republicans, so I'm not indiscriminately sniping Conservatives here.

That said, I'm not sure Huckabee is a wise choice for your short list. I'm a citizen of the State of Arkansas, and I've seen him in action for the last few years. He scares me.

As you may or may not know, Governor Huckabee used to be, for lack of a better term, fat. In fact, it was causing him health problems. So, as any self-motivated man in his condition would do, he lost weight -- about 100 pounds if memory serves. That's all well and good, and he should be commended for it.

Unfortunately, he didn't stop. Since his newfound revelation of healthiness, he has decided to shove this agenda down the throats of us Arkansans, whether we want it or not. The PSA campaign was annoying but harmless. However, he has significantly pushed this agenda within our public schools. For example, it is now forbidden for a teacher to use food of any kind to be used as a reward. So from the Christmas candy canes to classroom parties to celebrate academic achievement, teachers must find other ways to motivate children. In addition, if a child comes to school hungry, a teacher may not give him food.

It may seem a minor point, but if he's willing to impose his "health quest" on public schools then I worry about his ability to refrain from meddling where he has no business.
I see nothing remotely inappropriate in protecting gullible kids from those who would make a buck by feeding them stuff which may make them sick or kill them. One may quarrel with the details of Huckabee's approach, but I strongly dissent from the notion that it's not a perfectly legitimate function of government to protect children from exploitation which may be injurious to their health.
