McCain on the ropes

Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain has been dropping in the polls like a rock for some time now. Just a couple of weeks ago, he had to cut back on his staff because of financial problems. But as Fred Thompson displaces him in the GOP Top Three, questions about the viability of the McCain candidacy are becoming more and more persistent.

The one-time front runner, whose positions on immigration and fetal stem cell research are out of step with the majority of his party, now trails libertarian gadfly and minor candidate Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex) in fundraising!

Six months before the Iowa Caucuses, time is running out for McCain. More and more it's looking like Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, and Mitt Romney are the only candidates with a real shot at even being competitive in what almost amounts to a national primary, with the ultimate nominee likely being apparent by February 6. The emergence of Thompson has likely blocked any prospect of breaking into the top tier for former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who has been impressive- but who has to compete with Thompson and his own low name recognition for his natural constituency, the social Right.
