It's official: Thompson is the GOP front runner
According to the Harris Poll, Fred Thompson has passed Rudy Giuliani as the candidate of the most potential 2008 GOP primary voters and caucus-goers.
The latest numbers give Fred 32% TO 28% for Rudy. John McCain trails badly, with 11%, while
Mitt Romney- the overwhelming favorite here in Iowa- can only manage 9% nationally.
If I had to predict now, I'd say that Romney would win here in Iowa and possibly in New Hampshire, where he faces a much stiffer fight. Thompson will sweep the South, and appears to be poised to garner the largest solid block of Republican support. Giuliani will do well in the East and in metropolitan areas, where comparatively few Republicans live.
The West should split several ways, with Romney perhaps enjoying a slight edge over Thompson in the region.
Perhaps.
The race is far from over, but I like Thompson's or Romney's chances right now a lot more than Giuliani's, even if Rudy is a strong second in the overall national numbers.
I don't foresee a brokered convention. I do see Fred Thompson is the candidate most likely to garner sufficient nationwide support to avoid one.
