Here's what that negative ad Huckabee won't run said

Here's part of the text of that negative ad Mike Huckabee first said he wasn't going to run, and then- to compound the blunder- played for the assembled journalists at the press conference he called to announce that he wasn't going negative after all:

I'm Mike Huckabee, and I approve this message, because Iowans have a right to know the truth about Mitt Romney's dishonest attacks on me and even an American hero, John McCain.

Romney's record? Over $700 million in new taxes. Left office with a deficit. No executions. Supported gun control. And Romney's government mandated health plan provided a $50 co-pay for abortion.

I'm Bob Waters, and I approved this post because no matter what Mike Huckabee says,
you need to know what that ad would have told you.

It really is a remarkably parallel ad, and it really is a compliment to Huckabee (as to matters of personal conscience) that he decided not to air it if he feels raising such negative discussion is dishonest.

It parallel's Romney's because it cherry-picks the negative sounding aspects of his service and oversimplifies his positions, although arguably accurate. It is completely tit for tat.

I realize few people will say that this gaffe increased their respect for Huckabee. I've already seen many many stories that are mean-spirited and cynical. Personally, I believe Huckabee and this increases my respect for him. For what it's worth.

Dude, Huckabee just royally screwed himself...he should have just kept up with the ad, or never played it. The whole press corps was laughing at him for the obvious attempt to look clean, but get a hit in. As for the proof that he had made one...he could have given them contacts at the tv stations that would have confirmed they existed. Honestly, Huckabee has really fallen apart with this one.

Sorry I just read your post under this one, and you and I agree on this one. As a person, I think that he should have run the ad, or not shown one at all, but this ring around the rosies was a horrible move and he loses credibility in both areas. As a Romney supporter, i am happy, but sorry that it had to pan out that way...just a horrible move.
Don't see, coach, how it's possible to spin that nonsense about Romney being tougher on crack than Huck because Huck had the penalty cut to more than four times what Romney wanted as anything but deception, plain and simple.

guess Huckabee didn't screw himself...those Iowan evangelicals I guess are more than capable of putting everything else aside and hoist up the religion banner...no one is as ocked as me. I thought huckabee had blown it, i really did, but i guess it takes more than that to dissuade the Iowan evangelical community (homeschooling, etc. I was homeschooled too by the way, my mother thought that their wasn't enough Christian principles taught in the public school system, was homeschooled until highschool then went onto college, bachelors, and am currently in veterinary school working on my DVM. just pointing out that homeschoolers aren't dumb for the record.)
Romney screwed himself. The most common explanation for the result among commentators here in Iowa (and I've heard a few of the national ones say it, too): "Iowans notoriously just don't like negative campaigning."
