The color purple
If President-elect Obama is really interested in being a concilator, appointing Bobby Kennedy Jr.- author of the discredited whine about Ohio being stolen by the Republicans in 2004 and apologist for the right of Mickey Mouse to be registered to vote as long as he doesn't show up at the polls- to his cabinet would not be a good beginning.
Neither would the appointment of John Kerry to be his Secretary of State.
Colin Powell as SecDef would be a wash; whatever credibility he might ever have had as a Republican is gone in the wake of his endorsement of Obama. On the other hand, retaining Robert Gates at the Pentagon would not only provide continuity, but reassurance to those of us in need of it.
Bob Waters has an interesting suggestion, if Mr. Obama is really interested in signalling his desire to head a "purple" administration: why not assuage concerns about the new administration's foreign policy both in Iraq and elsewhere by appointing Joe Lieberman secretary of state?
One thing is certain: the composition of the Obama cabinet will be a solid hint as to whether the president-elect's "purple" rhetoric has any real substance.
