McAuliffe will run for Virginia governor

Former Democratic national chairman Terry McAuliffe has taken out papers to run for governor of Virginia next year.

McAuliffe will face primary competition from Delegate Jim Moran- brother of U.S. Rep. Jim Moran- and state senator Craigh Deeds. The Republican candidate likely will be Attorney General Bob McDonnell, who narrowly defeated Deeds for that position in 2005.

The incumbent, Tim Kaine, is also a Democrat, but Virginia governors are constitutionally limited to one term.

Next year's result in Virginia- a "red" state for decades, turned "blue" last Tuesday night and trending Democratic demographically due to the rapid increase in the population of D.C.'s Virginia suburbs- will be our first hint as to whether it will be possible to turn this key state "red" again.

Given what's happening to population patterns in the Old Dominion, it isn't going to be easy in any case.
