The liberal credo: 'The people are stupid, and the Republicans are evil'

Here is the inimitable Charles Krauthammer on why the core assumptions of the Obama administration and the Left generally are leading them into irrepressible conflict with the American people.

Krauthammer also explains- in case you miss the point- that when Leftists disagree with a conservative administration, this is dissent, and is as American as apple pie. When conservatives disagree with a Leftist administration, on the other hand, this is obstructionism, and it is unspeakably evil.

The late William F. Buckley once mused that conservatives tend to regard those with whom they disagree as misguided, whereas liberals tend to regard those with whom they disagree as evil.

But as Krauthammer points out, they also have a healthy contempt for the average American, and a politically unhealthy habit of explaining his failure to always see things their way as the result of his incurable stupidity. Unhealthy for the Republic- and unhealthy for the Left's long-term electoral prospects.

ADDENDUM: Professor Gerard Alexander of the University of Virginia considers the phenomenon of liberal condescension at- of all places!- the Washington Post.
