Castro coming to Iowa!
Starlin Castro, that is- the Cubs' potential rookie phenom. There had been some thought that he might make the jump directly to Wrigley, but manager Lou Pinella has decided otherwise.
Good idea to get him some experience in the high minors before he takes over the everyday shortstop's job. Bad idea to give Mike Fontenot the job as Ryan Theriot's backup in the meantime.
Nobody has any expectations for the Cubs this year, which is good. No pressure. The team is good enough to win the division if everything goes right, but nobody is counting on it. And since GM Jim Hendry, who wrecked the Cubs' 2009 season before it even began did nothing spectacularly stupid during this current off-season (letting Reed Johnson go was probably his worst move), I will begin the season the same way I have begun every baseball season since 1957 with the single exception of last year- rooting for the Men in Blue to defy history, expectations, and The Goat.
The Big Cubs' shortstop-in-waiting is more attraction for Principal Park and the Ryne Sandberg-managed Iowa Cubs this season. Ryno will probably be taking over as the Chicago Cubs' field manager next season, with Greg Maddux rumored to be set to succeed Hendry as general manager- that is, barring the Cubs making the playoffs and actually getting to the second round this time.
