The Democrats' Trayvon Martin chutzpah
It's been a while since I've used one of my favorite loan-words: chutzpah, a Yiddish term classically defined as that quality exhibited by a child who murders both of his parents, and then pleads for mercy on the ground that he is an orphan.
The Obama campaign seems poised to give chutzpah a new definition. It's claiming that the Republicans are politicizing the Trayvon Martin tragedy.
As we saw yesterday, the Obama campaign chose this particular moment to come out with a hoodie with the President's name on it. And Democrats in Congress have been falling all over each other to make political capital of the popularity of the "Lynch George Zimmerman" movement which has resulted from the breathtakingly one-sided coverage of the incident in the press (Spike Lee tweeted Zimmerman's alleged address- he got it wrong- and the Black Panthers have offered a $10,000 reward for Zimmerman- whom the police say they have no grounds to arrest- "dead or alive"). Moreover, Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.)- he of Black Panther fame back in the 'Sixties- was removed from the House floor for this:
They're continuing it today. Florida Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson claims that Martin was "hunted down like a dog" (the graphic includes the ubiquitous and ancient picture of a pre-pubescent Martin).
Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga) claims that Martin was "executed for walking while black in a gated community".
And of course, Cousin Maxine can't ever pass up an opportunity to be irresponsible. That disgrace to the name Waters chimed in, "The evidence really points to a fact that you had a gung-ho so-called Neighborhood Watchman who wanted to be a cop, basically, who was following a young black man who was unarmed and had committed no crime. That's pretty stiff evidence that this is possibly a hate crime."
In fact, the evidence- eye-witness evidence, to be precise- is that when Zimmerman, a member of the local Community Watch, approached Martin to inquire as to his business in the gated community in which Zimmerman resided, Martin- who apparently had a prior history of assaultive behavior- responded by punching Zimmerman, knocking him to the ground, sitting on him, and pounding his head on the concrete. Martin apparently also tried to take Zimmerman's gun. Zimmerman responded by using his gun to defend himself against what he reasonably saw as a threat to his own life.
The police did not charge Zimmerman, who argued that he acted in self-defense and in conformity with Florida law. Apparently the authorities- and the evidence- agree.
But not the Democrats or their allies in the media. However, it's the Republicans who are politicizing Trayvon's death.
Uh-huh.
