Obama campaign disavows ad blaming Romney for cancer death

The Obama campaign has disavowed an ad blaming Mitt Eomney for the death of a steelworker's wife.

This blog mistakenly attributed the ad to the campaign. In fact, it was produced by Priorities USA, an independent PAC supporting Mr. Obama. The texts of the entries in this blog blaming the Obama campaign itself have been corrected.

Despite the campaign's disavowal of the ad, its substance was in fact used previously by the campaign itself. The ad has drawn widespread criticism in the media and elsewhere as inaccurate, misleading, and defamatory.

Regardless of where the responsibility lies for this particular ad, it is only the latest example of one of the most defamatory and negative campaigns ever waged by a modern presidential candidate. Whether or not Mr. Obama's people are directly responsible for it, it merely reflects the tone of a campaign so dishonest, vicious and divisive that which will make it virtually impossible for the president to govern should he be re-elected.

The president who once campaigned as the champion of a "purple America" has proven to be one of the most deliberately divisive in history.
