Truly, truly sad.

Alas, my American League team, the Orioles, fell to the Evil Empire last night in twelve innings. And the best team in the National League, the Reds, are also out of the playoffs.

The Nationals MUST beat the evil (and once again unworthy, being a wild cart team) St. Louis Cardinals in order to salvage the honor of our national pastime.

In hockey, you can get away with having the playoffs be, in essence, a second season. But there's a reason why they play 162 games in baseball: it takes that long to get a result that means anything.

The present structure of the baseball playoffs is a joke. And that's especially true of best-three-out-of five series, whose results amount to a coin toss but which season after season eliminates teams with better credentials than the ones that remain.

I continue to think that if baseball follows its playoff structure to its logical conclusion, eventually we'll play the season and the playoffs- and then throw the results out and pick the two teams that play in the World Series out of a hat.
