Obama lets Republicans twist slowly in the wind

President Obama has rejected the House offer for a deal to raise the debt ceiling.

And why not? The polls continue to show that the government shutdown and the misguided attempt to defund Obamacare now rather than repeal or modify it when the votes are there is a disaster for the GOP, and has accomplished the nearly impossible task of actually making Obamacare more popular.

It's to Mr. Obama's advantage to let the Republicans stew in their own extremism. The only danger is that they'll actually be crazy enough to let a default happen. And that would only hurt the country, after all.
