No, Bonhoeffer was not a theological liberal!

There are those on the theological Left who try to claim World War II German Lutheran theologian and martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer as their own, balking at his emergence as an "Evangelical" hero.

The problem, of course, is that nobody could possibly mistake the author of Nachfolge for a member of the ELCA or the PCUSA or the UCC.

Yes, he was a student of Barth. And yes, he played the higher critical game. But he also took the Faith seriously.

In fact, as Gene Veith observes, nobody could make that mistake about anyone who took sin as seriously as Bonhoeffer did.

It is useful to note that Bonhoeffer's father was one of Germany's leading psychologists. Bonhoeffer knew the limits of the kingdom of the left, including government, medicine, and psychology.
And an atheist, as I recall.
