Look at the bright side, such as it is

There's a bright side to the popularity of Trump and Cruz.

The nomination of either- or, as I observed yesterday, even of a more rational candidate- will almost certainly mean the permanent splitting of the Republican party. Despite all the very significant bad things that would mean- including the emergence of the Democrats, who by all rights ought to lose this election, as the automatic owners of the White House and both houses of Congress for the foreseeable future- it will at least mean that those of us with no taste for either their brand of extremism or the opposite brand will no longer have to share a party with the likes of Trump and Cruz and Paul and their supporters.

And it will also permanently relieve those folks of the strange delusion that they speak for anything near a majority of the American people.
