Caudillo Trump

Fascinating article in the current Foreign Affairs about Donald Trump as caudillo- a mucho macho authoritarian strongman in the Spanish and Latin American traditions.

Thing is, I really don't find the prospect of electing somebody who can be spoken of in the same breath as Trujillo or Batista or Santa Anna or Juan Peron  or Francisco Franco to be terribly comforting.

A personal quirk of mine: I'm not real big on dictators. Hopefully, in a few short months, Trump's presidential prospects will be as Chevy Chase used to say of Franco, critically dead.

On the other hand, maybe having Donald Trump as president might improve our relations with the tinhorn dictators of the world.
