Pretty dire

Here is George R.R. Martin's original outline for A Song of Ice and Fire. A Stark contrast, so to speak with the final product.

Proof positive that sometimes plots, like wine and cheese, grow much, much better with age. These are not the Starks and Lannisters we have grown to love and hate lo these past several years. Originally the series was supposed to be a trilogy. I'm glad Martin decided to let the series dragon.
