Gov. Obvious once again points out... well, the obvious.
Appearing once more with Democrat Gov. John Hickenlooper of Colorado, Ohio's outgoing Republican governor, John Kasich, has once again pointed out that the deep divisions between our two crazy, extreme political parties may well doom the two-party system and open up a chance for third, more adequate and competent parties to come to the fore.
Kasich and Hickenlooper both insist that they will not run as a national unity ticket in 2020 despite an ongoing "tag team" mission to point out that the Republicans and the Democrats have failed us, and that neither party shows any inclination to start putting the welfare of the country ahead of bickering with and lying about the other. Precisely because both parties are so extreme and so crazy, I don't see how either of these intelligent and reasonable men would have a chance seeking the presidency in 2020 within the current arrangement. The way the Republicans have sold out to the Trumpist Know-Nothings makes me sadly certain that Gov. Kasich would have no chance of mounting a successful primary challenge to Our National Embarrassment, and I have no doubt that the equally crazy Democrats will nominate some leftist loon to oppose him in 2020. Once more, as was the case in 2016, the American people will be presented by the major parties with a choice between two unthinkable alternatives.
Yet I am confident that once more somebody both sane and qualified will offer them an option, whether they choose to take it or not. If Evan McMullin runs again, this time he'll be on the ballot in all 50 states. The same is true of any other reasonable person with any national following who chooses to swim against the tide of insanity which as swept over both major parties and threatens to wash our democracy away.
Kasich or Hickenlooper would be fine. But whoever it is that steps into the breach, we're already approaching the middle of the term for the disgrace who occupies the Oval Office right now. If anything more than another half-baked challenge to the ridiculous status quo is going to be mounted, the time is here for the sane people of America to start laying the groundwork. And that includes somebody standing up and being willing to be the person around whom they can rally.
