More good news: Arizona Republicans crush Joe Arpaio in their Senate primary

Joe Arpaio- the former Arizona sheriff who loved to arrest people because they looked Hispanic, who ran a county jail so brutal that the inmate suicide rate was 24% (compared with 6% in Chicago's Cook County Jail, 9% in New York, and 11% in Los Angeles; most of the deaths on Arpaio's watch were unexplained); who refused inmates medical treatment, who at long last, was convicted of defying a court order to stop violating the civil rights of inmates and sentenced to prison- but whom President Trump pardoned, calling him "a great American," praising him for his "outstanding service to the nation-" announced in January that he was going to run for the Republican nomination to succeed Jeff Flake as United States Senator from Arizona.

Yesterday he was crushed in the Republican primary. The winner was Rep. Martha McSally, the Air Force's first female pilot. Nearly complete returns gave McSally 52.9% of the vote to 28.2% for State Sen. Kelli Ward and 18.9% for Arpaio. In Arpaio's Maricopa County, which he served as sheriff, McSally had 149,149 to 77,299 for Ward and 48,192 for Arpaio with 91% of the votes counted.

Mr. Trump had remained neutral in the race, endorsing McSally last night. And McSally is a supporter of the president. Moreover, Arpaio is 86 years old. There is no way of knowing to what extent yesterday's result is a repudiation of that despicable senior citizen and to what extent it reflected concerns over his age.

But any way one looks at it, the result is a victory for America and its values. Congratulations to the Republican voters of Arizona for sending a thoroughly reprehensible character who by rights should still be in prison to a well-deserved and ignominious retirement.
