For Pete's sake! A new poll has Buttigieg leading in Iowa!
A new Monmouth poll shows Pete Buttigieg now leading among Democrats in Iowa.
I sometimes suspect that a hole has been torn in the fabric of reality and that we are living in a political novel. A badly-written one, to be sure. Donald Trump is not a believable character, to begin with, and his being elected president even by a constitutional quirk would be ludicrous if it hadn't actually happened.
But our unprincipled, faux-traditionalist, faux-conservative president being opposed by a gay centrist? Any publisher would laugh in your face if you submitted a novel with such a premise. But it could happen if Democrats are uncomfortable enough with Joe Biden and yet sane enough to forgo Elizabeth Warren.
On the other hand, Will Rodgers said it long ago: "I am not a member of any organized political party. I'm a Democrat." And whatever else one might say about the Democrats, they are never boring. Ironic that the man Jeb Bush rightly labeled "the Chaos Candidate" in one of the early 2016 debates should be the standard-bearer of the staid, gray, usually predictable Republicans. But maybe it shouldn't be a surprise if the Democrats counter with a gay centrist.
Better Mayor Pete than Elizabeth Warren.
