Think again, Sen.McConnell. Think again

Nate Silver's 538.com has put together an interesting picture of where the American people stand on impeachment as Mitch McConnell and the Republican majority of the Senate ponder how best to rig the trial so that Donald Fredovich emerges smelling as good as possible.

They have their work cut out for them.

42.4% of us approve of the job Mr, Trump is doing as president, 53% disapprove. The consensus of several polls shows  83.6% of Democrats, 41% of independents, 9.7% of Republicans, and 47% of all voters favor his removal from office.

A Harris poll of 1,500 voters completed on New Year's Eve shows 11% of Republicans, 83% of Democrats, 34% of independents, and 45% of all those participating favoring Mr, Trump's conviction and removal from office, with 81% 0f Republicans, 9% of Democrats, 43% of independents, and 41% of those responding opposed.

A  YouGov poll of 1,500 voters completed on Christmas Eve shows 7% of Republicans, 76% of Democrats, 40% of independents, and 44% of all those participating favoring Mr, Trump's conviction and removal from office, with 88% 0f Republicans, 11% of Democrats, 39% of independents, and 41% of those responding opposed.

The Ipsos Knowledge Panel- a standing sample kept uniform in membership by 538 and Ipsos to minimize randomness and better reflect trends- shows 57% agreeing that Mr. Trump committed an impeachable offense, and 52% agreeing that Mr. Trump's behavior relating to Ukraine and his refusal to cooperate with the impeachment investigation by the House is sufficient evidence to warrant his removal.

But the members of the panel want witnesses to be called at the trial to expand in what we know and flesh matters out. All in all, this does not bode well for Majority Leader McConnell's plan for a quick, perfunctory trial with few or no witnesses followed by a steamroller acquittal on a party-line vote and a victory lap by a president implausibly claiming vindication.

Donald Trump is above all else a con man and a skilled one at that. He has a following of gullible shills, eager to be conned. But the scam about to be perpetrated by the Republican majority in the Senate may well be one scam too many. If, as I expect, Sen. McConnell and his Republican colleagues are seen by the American people to sweep the charges against the president under the rug, there will be a reckoning within months. Not only will the voters do what the Senate majority refuses to dom but it won't be a majority for long, Come January, many of them may be asking former President Tremp for a job- at least as long as he can stay out of jail,

Other trials may nor be so easily rigged.
