Are the Democrats getting ready to crash and Bern?
He didn't do as well as he did in 2016, or as well as the polls said he would, but it appears that Bernie Sanders has won the New Hampshire primary. Nate Silver's 538.com is giving him a 50/50 shot to win the nomination.
I don't buy it. While Joe Biden is in deep trouble after a weak showing tonight, he still has his Southern firewall in place, and not only Pete Buttigieg but- surprisingly- Amy Klobuchar did well tonight, apparently finishing second and third. The sane wing of the Democratic party isn't beaten yet.
Nevertheless, Bernie's strong showing first in Iowa and then in New Hampshire despite being Donald Trump's dream opponent is only more evidence of how badly broken the two-party system is. A Trump-Sanders race only four years after Trump-Clinton would establish beyond much doubt that the system has gone haywire and underscore the desperate need for a national centrist third-party to save our democracy from a setup that has disenfranchised everybody but the crazies at the two ends of the spectrum.
I'm personally pulling for Klobuchar or Biden. Either would have a good shot at defeating the most unpopular president in modern times. And they probably would do the least damage to the Republic in the process. But it looks, in any event, like it's going to be a wild and woolly ride to Milwaukee.
