Trump administration buried a a CDC plan for opening up America safely

The CDC planned to release a detailed guide to how and when businesses, churches, schools, and other public facilities could safely be reopened last Friday. But the Trump administration buried it, telling its authors that it "would never see the light of day."

The document, entitled "Guidance for Implementing the Opening Up America Again Framework," was described by the Associated Press last week, before the White House torpedoed it.

The move is yet another step in the ongoing efforts of the administration to minimize public health concerns about COVID and trivialize the lives and safety of Americans to reopen the economy before the experts believe it to be safe. The alt-right media and large elements of what had hitherto been the mainstream conservative movement have joined the effort- whose rationale is unclear, especially since the economy wouldn't recover before the November election even if President Trump's repeated prophecy came true, and the virus vanished overnight and the inevitable spike in new cases would simply force the economy closed again.

The overwhelming majority of Americans in poll after poll support stay-at-home orders, social distancing, and the restrictions on business despite the devastating effect the virus is having on the economy, recognizing that ignoring the virus and attempting to return to business-as-usual is simply not a rational option and that a spike in infections would simply force the government to shut things down again. They consistently say that they fear premature reopening more than the economic consequences of things remaining closed. Furthermore, we've long since passed the point at which there is any possibility of the economy being revived before the November election.

Perhaps the underlying motivation for what seems a totally irrational stance by the Administration and its supporters is an attempt to somehow justify President Trump's refusal to recognize COVID-19 as a serious threat until a few weeks ago. He and his supporters have continued to downplay a pandemic which is predicted by the experts to kill more than the 100,000 Americans which Mr. Trump now admits could die in this outbreak of a disease he once compared to the seasonal flu.
