Blogging the first debate
I wonder whether Trump is really going to be foolish enough to question Biden's mental fitness. According to a recent poll, more people were concerned about Trump's psychological health than Biden's. This is not an argument the President should want to have.
Here we go.
Trump is making the Barrett confirmation about power. "We should because we can." I think that's a mistake. Biden is overtalking Trump for a change. Makes me smile.
Trump is throwing around the world "socialist" promiscuously and lying about Biden's record. "You didn't want me to ban China?" Was that an option?
Biden isn't going to back down. That's a good sign.
Now Trump is trying to overtalk Wallace. He's not having any. Good for him.
Aw. Trump says he's debating Wallace. Wallace is picking on him. Poor baby! Now POTUS is rambling incoherently about insulin and interrupting the questions.
Biden actually called him a liar. Saying that to the President used to be unthinkable. That was before Trump. Now he's called him a clown! Good for him!
Biden is holding Trump accountable. He's not going to like that. And he actually just said that POTUS doesn't know what he's talking about! About time somebody said that to his face!
WOW! He just told Trump to shut up! I'm not sure how this is playing in Peoria, but I love it! About time somebody stood up to the Orange Bully!
Joe is confronting Trump's COVID incompetence and telling it like it is. It's going to be interesting to hear Trump respond. Well, he's not responding. He's babbling in a hostile manner and bragging about how Dr. Fauci and Democratic governors think he did a great job. He says that Biden "wouldn't have made ventilators." Trump just tried to compare H1N1 to COVID. Biden just recited the comparative death statistics. So far, Biden is substantive, and Trump is hostile.
Biden's responses to this nonsense are priceless. Apparently, POTUS thinks the drug companies know more than doctors. Biden just hit him with the bleach line. Trump claims that Biden "knows" that he was "sarcastic." Now Trump is insulting Biden's intelligence. ROTFL!
More COVID misinformation from POTUS. And he's babbling about Dr. Fauci being against masks and then changing his mind! Joe just called him a fool. How times have changed since we ended up with Donald Trump as our president. Somehow.
Word salad, conspiracies, and hostility. And whining. No, Mr. President. You were not smart to compare brains with Joe Biden!
Trump wants his time AND time to respond to Biden. "I'm the one who brought back football!" Biden is laughing- as well he should.
Trump claims that he's paid "millions" each year in taxes. Biden: "Show us your tax returns." Trump specified that he paid "millions" in 2016 and 2017. At least that's more specificity than we've had before.
"You're the worst President America has ever had." Bazinga!
Trump is making assertions in response to arguments and contradicting the statistics on job creation under the last three years of the Obama administration instead of the first three of Trump's. I think Chris Wallace may send the President to his room without his dinner!
"It's hard to get any word in with this clown- this President."
Trump: "Can I be honest?" Wallace: "No!" That's not what Wallace meant to say, but it's still true- and hilarious! Now Trump is claiming that Biden called African-Americans "super-predators." More word salad. He's repeating his nonsense about Biden not speaking out on "law and order."
The man just overtalks and babbles...
POTUS is incoherent. Simply incoherent.
Now Biden called him a racist. Bullies don't like been stood up to. Joe is doing it whether he likes it or not.
Trump is making up statistics about crime now. He just said that violent crime has gone down on his watch. Now he's talking about how it's the fault of Democratic mayors that it's gone up! Biden is holding him accountable for cutting Federal spending on local law enforcement.
Chris Wallace has a great deal more patience than I do.
The two men were asked why the voters should choose them rather than their opponents. Trump raved and made wild and undocumented claims and charges. Biden answered with facts- when Trump wasn't interrupting him.
Trump made some sense on forest management as a way to address forest fires, but he's incoherent when it comes to regulations on auto emissions.
Trump just lied about his "nuke the hurricanes" suggestion a while back and told Biden, "You make up a lot of things!!!!" Hilarious!
He's trying to pin the Green New Deal on Biden. Uh-oh. Biden just had a slip of the tongue and called his plan "the Green New Deal." But when Wallace challenged him, he corrected himself.
Biden hit it out of the park on mail-in ballots and a peaceful transition. Trump is raving incoherently again.
"People are delighted with the job we've done." Mr. President, get a clue!
If only Fred Trump had spanked his little boy once in a while...
Now Trump won't commit to telling his supporters to stay calm and peaceful and not to declare victory until a result is declared. Biden just did.
Trump even overtalked Wallace in trying to end the debate.
I'm sure that TrumpWorld thinks that Trump won. They would think that no matter what happened. In fact, it was a rout. Joe Biden scored the most decisive victory I've seen in my lifetime in a presidential debate.
The nation saw a competent leader in Joe Biden and an incoherent bully in Mr. Trump.
I'll be fascinated to see what the polls say. But Biden just might have sealed the deal tonight.
ADDENDUM: CBS instant poll.
Who won?
Biden 48%, Trump 41%, Tie 10%. In other words, no minds were changed. But if the truth is told, it wasn't that close.
How did the debate make people feel? 69% said, "annoyed."
