Sveum out as Cubs manager; will Girardi be the new one?

After a year in which the Cubs finished thirty games under .500 and budding stars Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo significantly regressed, the Cubs have fired manager Dale Sveum. He'd run the club for two years.

Speculation as to his successor centers on New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who recently declined to say that he wanted to stay in New York. Another obvious choice, Cubs Hall-of-Famer Ryne Sandberg, was recently named to manage the Phillies.

Girardi, who attended Northwestern University, grew up as a Cub fan and spent most of his playing career on the North Side.
